The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us.
The problem with this is that when we’re not even aware of our habit, routine, impulse, and reaction, we don’t even know what habits, routines, impulse, and reactions are. So we’re actually powerless to control them.
The solution to the problem is to go out of your way to remember what you were doing when you were on autopilot. This requires a lot of remembering. So in the case of al diablo, the first thing you do every day is to go out and make a list of all the things you did yesterday that were automatic. Then you fill in the gaps. Then you decide how to spend the next two days.
The problem is that when you’re on autopilot, you’re often stuck doing the same things over and over again. Just like a real job, you have to get used to just getting up in the morning, sitting down to a morning meeting, doing your chores, doing your job, and going home. The best habit to learn in life is the habit of going out of your way to remember what you were doing yesterday that was automatic.
That’s easier said than done though, especially for a newbie. You need to learn that new habits are built on repetition, so you have to do things over and over again until you get good at it. For instance, I used to work the same job everyday, but I had to learn how to sit down at a certain time, go over some work I needed done, and then walk out the door, and do it over and over again.
I am not suggesting you change your job, but it does show you that the habits you developed yesterday are automatic. Also, it teaches you that life is a continuous cycle and you have to learn to stop and pay attention to the things that are happening right now.
As we’ve noted a million times, the majority of our daily routines are automatic. Most of us don’t have to think about what we’re going to eat for lunch, or if we’ll be able to do laundry. We just do what we have to do. The problem is that we don’t always pay attention to these automatic actions and just go with the flow.
The problem with this is that we often don’t stop to think about what we are doing. We are so used to doing these things that when something goes wrong, it feels like the universe is against us. I know that sounds cliché, but it is pretty hard to change when you have been doing the same things for so long that you don’t even realize you’re doing it.
If you want to change, you have to stop doing things the way they are and start doing them the way you want them to be. You dont have to go to every grocery store and stock up on every thing you need to start a new life.
